DESCRIPTION | The scope of this Unit is to provide a sufficiently broad, yet integrated and cutting edge review of leadership. While the area of leadership is one of the most researched areas to date, and the literature domain is voluminous, there are still areas that require further thought and further questioning in order to separate the wheat from the chaff and science from myth. Such questions include: Are leaders born or made? Is leadership a product of the leader? Is leadership and innovation really related? Are the followers as important as the leader? And if so, when and why? This Unit answers these questions in an interactive manner with the audience and provides some leads to possible answers using the plethora of research available but also practical examples from real organizations. In view of this, the following topics will be covered through discussion and debates: - The complexities of understanding leadership - The major schools of leadership: tensions, convergences and emerging perspectives - Leadership development! Writing off a century of consultancy? - Leadership, the cutting-edge experience and misconceptions - Leadership in a vacuum-free context: Culture, institutional, gender and ethical debates - Emergences of new leadership thoughts: the agenda for the way forward Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - re-visit an old concept from a more scientist-practitioner stance. - evaluate the contemporary schools of thought surrounding leadership from a critical perspective. - develop thoughtful insights about the domain of ‘leadership’ in a wider social, cultural and institutional context. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - discuss the more complex reality surrounding the topic of leadership. - propose new forms of approaches to investigating the phenomenon of leadership. - weight the relevance of leadership within a systemic ambient. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Given the nature of this topic, there is no one specific text which will encompass all these subjects. However, a strong point of reference is the following text as it has raised a number of issues in the emergence of ‘leadership’: Antonakis, J., Cianciola, A. T. & Sternberg, R. J. (2004). The Nature of Leadership. Thousand Oaks, California, Sage Publications. In addition, a special pack shall be prepared and which will be handed to students at the beginning of the programme. |
